Reallusion has unveiled another work in progress video showing off some new features in Character Creator 4, the ability to create custom expressions. In CC3 you already have a very good expression editor thanks to the ExPlus set (you can even see my article on facial capture using the iPhone to see how well CC3 characters replicate facial expressions), but in CC4 you’ll be able to customize your facial expressions.

CC4 will feature the ability to edit expressions to make them exactly the way you want them. In the video example they use a cartoon character with exaggerated expressions, which I think is very suitable since cartoon characters will often require more exaggerated expressions. However, there are very expressive people in real life, and this will be useful in those cases as well.

From what you see in the video, you can edit the expressions in various ways. For example, you can use the face morph sliders to edit the expression, and you can also use the mesh editing tools to modify the expressions at a vertex-level.

If you are using a 3D modeling application, you can even export the morphs, edit them in your application and then bring them back into CC4. This is a very useful feature, since it lets you take advantage of the modeling tools of your favorite 3D application.

There is also a new tool called Delta Mush, which smoothens the polygons. Sometimes, when you are using morphs, there will be some distortion on the mesh, and this tool is meant to smooth that distortion and make the mesh look better.
