If you are an Unreal Engine user, you should take some time to browser the Unreal Marketplace, because there are various assets that might be useful to you. This time, I am bringing a volumetric material that can be used to create underwater tunnels, tanks and even other more specific things you may need. Volumetric Glass for UE4 is a volumetric material that is configured to derive material instances so you can create a variety of volumetric container effects for various purposes.
After you add this pack to your project of choice, you will find the VolumetricGlass folder inside your Content Browser. There, you will find a scene that contains two different showcases. The first one is an underwater tunnel, where you can walk around and see the ocean, to see how the material can be used in a large environment; and the other part is a small room with different containers and effects, where you can see other variations of the material in action (these variations are created using Material Instances).
The material itself is not “volumetric” in the strict sense. What I mean is, if you go “into” the ocean you won’t see the same effect you see from within the tunnel. Instead, the material simulates volume using various parameters.
What’s nice is you can change the colors, density, and even brightness, so you can get pretty wild results, including “magic balls” that you can use in a fantasy game.
The material is $35. If you think it can be useful to you, specially if you plan to use it in a lot of projects, it can be worth the investment.
