The first short this week is a stunning piece that's been around for some time, and I'm surprised I'm finding this now. You truly feel the desperation of the central character in this film.

This Virus Shouldn't Exist (But it Does)

I've previously featured a short from this team. Their work is amazing, and I highly recommend checking out more on their channel. They make their beautiful science animations through the use of Adobe Illustrator and After Effects. I figured this one was timely with the constant threat of Covid at present... 

Hidden in the microverse all around you, there is a merciless war being fought by the true rulers of this planet, microorganisms. Amoebae, protists, bacteria, archaea and fungi compete for resources and space. And then there are the strange horrors that are viruses, hunting everyone else. Not even being alive, they are the tiniest, most abundant and deadliest beings on earth, killing trillions every day. Not interested in resources, only in living things to take over. Or so we thought.

It turns out that there are giant viruses that blur the line between life and death – and other viruses hunting them.

Pure Concentricity

I love the 'experimental' section on Vimeo, as there is so much great inspiration in design there. This particular piece is quite odd, but I especially love the beginning with the wonderful textures of nature through the frantic pacing of photo stills.

Human beings wear concentric rings of shaving creams.

Pure Concentricity was created in the span of two weeks as a commission for Denver Digerati. Composed of sequential photographs, the animation was limited to the natural landscape, the human figure, and concentric circles of shaving cream.

Filmed using practical effects (No CGI)
