The Motion Weekly is a showcase of awe-inspiring short films, animation, incredible live-action, motion design, outstanding cinematography, and wicked cool experimental works. This week, I'm showcasing a mixed assortment of incredible pieces. I hope you enjoy this week's picks as much as I do.

Wild Love

The first piece this week, is, well...awesome! It is a very well-crafted animated short, all around. I must warn viewers, however, as it is a bit gory, so not really family-friendly. Incredible work went into this film, so please be sure to check out the behind the scenes videos here.

I Was Still There When You Left Me

This next piece I found as unsettling as I did wonderful. Inspired by the tragedy of the Grenfell Tower fire in London in 2017, this Belgium-produced short film raises important questions. That said, the filming and acting in this powerful film is brilliant.

Satellike

I love fluid animation, and this piece is an extraordinary example. This piece was produced through experiments with paints and rare materials. The visuals are stunning, especially at full-screen!

This project was initiated by a job I did for the National Palace Museum of Taipeh. The museum ran an exhibition on culture treasures of the history of Taiwan in 2020. I was hired to create fluid and abstract interpretations of some iconic items, a collection of several drawings and artworks. I decided to develop my existing methods further, stepping away from stock paints and ink and creating most of the paints myself. One important aspect was to implement natural colors and realistic earth tones to the color palette and focus more on details than on a commercial look with punchy color and contrast.
Over a period of 4 months, I experimented with natural substances like sand, stone powder and historic pigments. Some of these supplies are rare and expensive, for example jade and malachite powder.

What you see in SATELLIKE are very long shots of watery ink in motion on several coats of half dried paint. Drying the paint leads to organic structures which can be brought to life again with water, ink and sour flow release mediums. The results look different from my usual approach, way more realistic and less otherworldly. I was excited about the aesthetics of the images and decided to do an individual piece. Although this is the final result for now, it feels more like I’m at the very beginning.

INSMED| UNBREAKABLE

The last piece in the showcase this week comes from Roof Studios. Unbreakable is a fun and beautifully animated story, filled with incredible color. The film was made to bring awareness to treatments for Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) from the Insmed company. Insmed pioneered the development of a drug delivery system for pulmonary patients.

“Unbreakable” is the story of Barbara the Bunny. When she begins to persistently cough, “Quality Control” at the toy factory labels her “defective,” and so her search for treatment begins. She goes from shop to shop to no avail, until she discovers a loose string of yarn that takes her on a magical journey across town and into the arms of a toy repair shop owner.
