5 Simple Tips On Becoming More Creative

Jan 31, 2020 at 05:00 am by -gToon

Creativity is something that we all want to be better at. When you finish creating something you often feel better about yourself. There’s a sense of pride in knowing “I made this”. Plus there’s the satisfaction of setting out do something you wanted to do that is unique and could only have come from you.

Creating something means that you get an idea from something (could be a poem, a tv show, the color of a water puddle, or a conversation with a friend) then you mull it over in your mind until you find the right way to express that idea. Of course, some people just jump right in with no real direction other than their idea. Other people like to plan the idea out before they even begin to do that practical work necessary to bring their idea to reality.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that there are certain things I can do to become more creative. We all have fallow periods, so if you find you need inspiration or just a little boost, please try the five tips.

They work for me and I hope they work for you.

Change Your Habits.

We all have habits that make us feel secure. Habits, however, can get in the way of being creative. Beckett once wrote, “Habit is the great deadener”., and I agree. With this in mind, I suggest you think about the things you habitually do each day and then change it to something else.

For example, I always take the same route to work each day. What if I decided to change my route to something new? I could study Google maps and find a new route that takes me past some interesting neighborhoods or buildings.  Perhaps you’ll find a new area that will give you some ideas.

Find your own Voice

All of has a unique perspective on the world. Our experiences, both good and bad, give us ideas and viewpoints on the world that make the way we tell stories that are all our own. Finding your voice means looking for ideas that resonate or that make you feel something and then creating things that show your view of the world. Many start out copying great works and that’s ok, but eventually, you have to step out on your own and discover what you want to say.

Take Up a Craft

Crafting is one of the best ways to relax and be creative. There are so many different kinds of crafts that it only takes a short time to find something you want to craft. There are all kinds of books on crafts. Local libraries often have craft classes or you could attend a craft fair for ideas. Etsy.com is the premier craft-focused marketplace. Do some browsing and find a craft you’d like to try and then do it!

Pay More Attention to the World Around You

Although this suggestion might be obvious, we forget to look at things around us. It’s understandable because we are all thinking about life problems and issues. But we can wake our selves up mentally and really pay attention to what’s going on around us as we go through our day.

All it takes is to tell yourself, “I’m going to pay attention today”.  You’ll be surprised how many things you’ll discover that could spark an idea for a character or a scene. Creative people always pay attention.

Don’t hold back at the beginning

It’s one of the biggest ways to stop your creativity cold - being overly critical at the beginning of the creative process. Once you get the idea run with it. Don’t hold back. By spending too much time detailing and editing your work at the beginning, you run into losing interest. You think about what others will say about your creation instead of what you want to say. This can also lead to losing the inspiration you had at the beginning.

Let go. Imagine you are a jazz musician: stay in the right key, but play unconsciously. You’ll surprise yourself.

 Last Thoughts

Being creative is a simple process. All you have to do is pay attention and use your imagination. Our lives often get in the way of finding things that inspire us. Worry, doubt, fear: these are things we all share. The trick is to put them aside for a while in order to become more alive. And that leads to becoming more creative.

All of my suggestions here are about practicing daily to look for things that stimulate you and cause you to imagine. Look at you’ll find something interesting to create.
