The 2019 Siggraph conference is taking place next week (July 28-Aug 1) at the Los Angeles Convention Center. I'll be attending 4 days of the conference as a reporter for Renderosity. This will be my 12th Siggraph conference and I'm still excited to be attending. Every conference is unique and contemporary. It's one of the things I love about the conference: the careful planning and attention to the current themes of modern computer graphics. Not to mention the fact that there are literally thousands of people who are all interested in the same thing.
The Los Angeles Siggraph (takes place every other year) is further unique in that it takes place in the heart of Hollywood. That means that practically every major studio will be sharing their work and ideas. Attendance is usually up when Siggraph is in Los Angeles, too. Which makes for a lively and challenging conference. Challenging in the sense that there is so much programming that you have to make choices about what to attend, which leaves out some events that are really cool. Ah, well, as I quickly learned years ago you could attend the same conference a half a dozen times and still not repeat anything.
I love the Siggraph conference.
Overview of my schedule
Since I have many connections now with CG companies, I field dozens of requests for meetings. I've learned to accept the ones that I'm truly interested in. There are only so many meetings you can take before they become overwhelming. I always like to keep some free time available for accidental meetings and events. You might hear another reporter or attendee tell you about an event that you didn't know about but really want to attend.
With that in mind, here is my overall schedule for Sunday through Wednesday at next weeks Siggraph conference.
Sunday, July 28
- Breakfast at the Pantry
- Registration and Orientation
- Art Gallery
- Emerging Technologies
- Studio visit (hands-on technology)
- Siggraph Talks: Classic Art, Cutting Edge
- Studio Workshop: Sequencer Cinematography with Unreal Engine
Monday, July 29
Tuesday, July 30
Wednesday, Aug 1
What I hope to accomplish at Siggraph 2019
I am always looking to discover new graphics technology at the Siggraph, but most importantly I'm looking for how technology affects artists and their work. You could say I'm seeking the “people stories” in the technology. Also, I'm always promoting Renderosity and Renderosity Magazine. Looking for ways to introduce people to Renderosity culture and artists.
I'll be posting here each day on my adventures and discoveries. I will also post on the Renderosity Magazine Facebook page my photographs and videos. And if the technology gods are willing perhaps we'll get a live stream going at some point.
If you live in Los Angeles and want to attend, Blender.org is offering some free tickets. Won't get you into everything but it's a good deal.
