Add life to your social media pictures with Pixaloop

Pixaloop is a small application for your mobile phone that lets you add quick nice animations to your photographs very easily. Note this app is not a replacement for high-end video animation apps like Adobe After Effects, but rather an app that lets you quickly create catchy animations for social media.

Adding those animations consists on a few quick steps.

First, you draw paths along your image that define how the pixels will "flow" to create the animation. Then, you add anchors to limit the spreading of the animation (think of it as a very rudimentary "mask"), and then you paint a "freeze" mask to the parts of the image, so they don't animate.

As an example, you can add the paths to the image below to make the waterfall flow downwards; then, you add the anchors to the sides of the waterfall so those parts don't move; last, you add a freeze to the rock and person at the bottom, so they remain static.

You can also change the movement speed, to make animations run slower or faster.

Pixaloop also has a very quick and easy sky replacement tool. All you need to do is select your sky of choice, and it will automatically replace your photo's current sky.

What's nice about this is that the sky is also animated, adding some extra "attractiveness" to your image. One thing I have to admit is that, since this process is automated, you can't really do a fancy pixe-perfect sky replacement like you would in high end programs, so you will really get visible masking feathers at edges where the sky meets other elements.

Lastly, you can also add some camera animations effects to the image. These effects are mostly meant to add some sort of "hand-carried" effect, since they simulate the camera moving up/down and left/right in various ways.

You can also add nice overlays to your animation. These overlays add animated sprites on top of your video, like rain, fog, butterflies, etc.

Once you are ready, you can export the video in different formats, depending on what you want to do. For example, you can export a Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram ready video.

Once the video is exported, you can simply share it on your social network of choice.

You can download Pixaloop for free on your phone. However, you will encounter certain limitations. For example, while you can add all the pixel-oriented animations and camera effects, but you can only select from a few skies and overlays. Image color adjustments (brightness, contrast, saturation, temperature) are only available in the Pro version.

I don't think that's a big problem, though, since the free version of the app has enough to let you get started with it. Pixaloop Pro gives you different payment options depending on what you need: you can get a one month subscription for around $4, a 12 month subscription for roughly $20, or you can make an one-time purchase of $60.
