Let's talk about communication...language...words. What does this have to do with inspiration? Well, words are powerful, evocative...they have impact. It's very apparent in advertising, the impact of words on the consumer. But, any creative can use words as a powerful tool for inspiration.
So, one day a word came up in conversation that I hadn't heard in awhile. That word was 'brash.' By definition, it describes an unappealing trait. Someone who is rather rude, overbearing, etc. However, I thought about that word, the images it evoked in my mind, and thought about ways to capture it in an image.
Thinking further on this, I realized that I long overlooked a very powerful form of inspiration. I started thinking of the possibilities that could arise by looking at a word, dissecting it, and taking in every bit of feeling associated with it...and then creating something on the basis of just that one word. We've all heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, but what if you take just one word as a starting point to create that picture?
No matter what type of work you do as a creative, challenging yourself regularly could be a wonderful thing. And all it could take is that one word. So often, just one word is the essence of a design project. Just one word can spark something huge. Just one word can make all the difference.
Whether you are a designer, illustrator, writer, photographer, or an artist in any medium, give it a try. Pick out a word that strikes you and think on it...let it lead you somewhere. Or, why not find a word generator app and challenge yourself with whatever is thrown at you? There are plenty apps available.
I've used a word generator app I downloaded to my android phone for songwriting ideas. It's just a simple app that offers up one to eight words every time I open it. Really simple, yet a really great tool to have. And, I'm finding myself using it for much more than songwriting.
So, why not challenge yourself with words? Try it daily, weekly, or whatever suits you. Just give it a shot and see if it works for you.
