"SIGGRAPH 2018 is a five-day immersion into the latest innovations in CG, Animation, VR, Games, Digital Art, Mixed Reality and Emerging Technologies. Experience research, hands-on demos, and fearless acts of collaboration."
How does one prepare for a conference so large that it would take a month to see and do everything? This is the dilemma I face every year when I'm getting ready for Siggraph. Siggraph, or the Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques is 44 years old this year. I've attended the conference as a Renderosity journalist for the last 12 years. It is a remarkable event and I have enjoyed every one of them.
This year, Siggraph 2018, the conference is being held in Vancouver, B.C. which is my favorite city in the world. It is the third time Siggraph has gone to Vancouver. Each time the conference has had booming attendance and stronger support in Canada. I am very much looking forward to attending this year's event and would like to share some of what I plan on doing there.
Virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality is a booming business. Competition is fierce. It seems that breakthrough virtual reality technology happens every year. The Siggraph 2018 conference will all over VR and AR. I'll be spending a lot of time reporting on this topic.
I'm a sucker for new tech. The Siggraph conference features a huge emerging tech gallery. I'll be reporting on what I see and experience. There will also be updates to a lot of familiar applications like Maxon's Cinema 4D. This will be a strong focus during my trip to the conference.
The SIGGRAPH 2018 Art Gallery is a curated exhibition exploring the theme of Original Narratives. This dialogical space enables us to reflect on the roots of our diverse cultural values and rituals through contemporary creative practices.
I'm so pleased that the Siggraph conference still continues to support innovative art. Every year the Art Gallery displays amazing work submitted by artists the world over. This year the them is "original narratives" and I will be there to share my thoughts and photos.
Siggraph is about technology, but even more so it's about the people behind the tech. I plan on meeting and talking with as many people as I can. One of the great pleasures of Siggraph is the accidental meetings you have. I will look forward to these experiences and will share them with you.
One of my all-time favorite 3D applications is Maxon's Cinema 4D. Every year Maxon hosts a press luncheon where they announce new features or updates to Cinema 4D. This year should prove particularly interesting as Maxon has just announced a new version of the program: Cinema 4D R20. Can't wait to learn more about what Maxon has done to this already fine program! Note that Maxon will have a large presence at Siggraph and will be streaming live a host of pros doing their thing at the Maxon booth. Check the C4DLive.com site for more details.
The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival, made up of both an Electronic Theater and a VR Theater, celebrates storytelling through the prism of computer graphics.
Siggraph 2018 will be hosting their annual animation festival for four nights. I always attend this festival because it will feature some of the most original and entertaining animation in the world. Plus, there will be VFX shorts and much more.
Deep Learning and AI
One of the great breakthroughs in computer technology over the last 5 years is deep learning. Now animators and VFX artists are taking advantage of deep learning to expand their craft. I will be reporting on the classes, talks, and conversations I have on this important subject.
The city of Vancouver is a remarkable place to hold the Siggraph 2018 conference. The bookstores, restaurants, and parks are world class. I'll be sharing my thoughts and experiences as I explore this great city.
I will share tweets, facebook posts and perhaps a live session on the Siggraph show floor next week. There is so much to see and do. I'll do my best to share it with you. Note that the Siggraph website will be announcing live sessions from Siggraph all next week so stay tuned!
