From, the creators of Make Magazine, we report on a two-part article that introduces Virtual Reality using the free Unity game platform and the very inexpensive Google Cardboard. This is a first of a series of articles from Make that will look at how to DIY Virtual Reality.

The overall series starts with Part 1: Getting Started with Virtual Reality: An Introduction to Unity

First, I'll be covering the basics of how you can build these worlds in Unity and bring them to life in VR. We'll get started by going over the basics of Unity from the perspective of people who are used to building physical things.

Patrick gives you a very basic intro to Unity and it's workflow (pretty intuitive and simple) so as to get you prepped for Part 2: Building for Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is a simple cardboard holder for your smartphone that comes with an SDK (software development kit) which plugs into Unity in order to create the VR experience.

In this article, we will look at how you can bring the Google Cardboard camera into a Unity project so we can view a scene in virtual reality. I'll be using the Maker Faire robot scene I imported in our first article on Unity -- you can use any Unity scene you'd like. I'll be sticking with a scene that has only a few objects to keep things simple.

One pretty cool thing that Patrick does in his two articles is to give you options for the Apple iPhone VR experience using Google Cardboard, or using the Android operating system. It's great to have both options as there are good VR applications in both worlds.

Head over to for part 1 and part 2 of the "How to Get Started with Virtual Reality" series. Also, Google has produced a good video on integrating Unity and Google Cardboard (see below).
