Since March 1999, Rena, who goes by the username renapd on Renderosity, has been an active member of the Renderosity community.
"It started out as a fun hobby for personal recreation, developed into true passion that led me to quit my career as a PR in pro-sound equipment and dedicate my full time to 3D," she said.
In that time, the Greek native has become a master of clothes from era costumes to fantasy outfits. The Renderosity exclusive vendor said hers was a mastery born out of necessity. When she started with Poser 3, none of the characters had clothes. So she had to draw her own. The more she did it, the more she liked it.
Over time, Rena developed her creations into a full-time job, which allowed her to stay at home with her family. Rena creates most of the images promoting Renderosity product and vendor sales.
Renapd opened up about the early days, how northern Ohio is her favorite place in the world and what inspires her.
How long have you been designing and why did you start?
Renapd: I've been around colors and materials my entire life. My dad was a true artist!
In late '90s, I just wanted people for my Bryce scenes, that's how I discovered poser and got immediately hooked. Poser 3 people were naked, so I had to draw the outfits on their bodies at the time to dress them up and used primitive props as accessories. It started out as a fun hobby for personal recreation, developed to true passion that led me to quit my career as a PR in pro-sound equipment and dedicate my full time to 3D.
What's your favorite software to create with?
Renapd: Poser & Corel Photo-Paint
What inspires your creations?
Renapd: TV series, magazines, paintings, the web, people in the street. Any interesting face or outfit gets an immediate snapshot in my mind for future reference.
What is your favorite thing to design?
Renapd: I've started out with characters, but clothes have always been my obsession, especially era-costumes and fantasy outfits. I can watch over and over a historical or fantasy movie just for the pleasure of studying their clothes.
Do you have a favorite era of fashion?
Renapd: Renaissance and late medieval times - the more ornaments and rich fabric on an outfit, the better! Fantasy though, even more! In that field, you can add or mix any way you like. It's the perfect limitless playground for any passionate texturer.
What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
Renapd: Although I have traveled a lot in four out of five continents in my life and love to talk and socialize. But I'm having the best of times just staying at home for very long periods of time. Months may pass by without setting a foot outside the house and I won't even notice.
Where has been your favorite place to travel to?
Renapd: Everybody says that Ohio is like a plate, but to me, Napoleon, Ohio, has been my favorite place of all.
I lived for a year on a small hill by the Maumee River banks and it was heaven at summer time In winter, the tinkles and rainbows created by the morning sun as light went through the long icicles on the trees and the frozen river, turned the scenery into a pinkish crystal kingdom out of this world! No other experience on any continent ever matched that magical scene.
Why were you in Ohio?
Renapd: When I was 17 years old, I won a scholarship from an American agency in Greece and I became an exchange student with an American host family to complete my high school senior year in the U.S.A. It was the best experience of my life and my very first time away from home -- a whole year and a half at the other side of the world. The reward was tremendous. I stood on my own feet, matured, set my priorities straight. In a few words, it affected me the most to become the person I am today.
Strange enough, the U.S.A. felt like home from the very first moments. (Maybe it has something to do with a past life?) A few years later I returned with my own family for another couple of years, but this time south, in Miami, Fla.
Those trips of mine were the longest and the beginning of it all. For a full decade afterward, I was living like a gypsy jumping from one plane to another all around the world on business. I was the PR for a large pro-sound company and that's how I got to visit so many countries and continents. So finally when I had to settle down and stay home to raise my kids, it was a godsend gift as I love being at home.
